The online application form: Set yourself apart from the mass

To get the job that you want, you need to have the appropriate qualifications. There is no doubt about that. But someone who knows the specifics of the online application process and keeps them into account has a bigger chance to be noticed between all the other candidates.

More and more companies prefer to use online application forms. They allow them to follow up the applications more easily and accelerate the process. Since all applications are similar, they can compare candidates more easily, since they make sure they have the same information about every candidate. This is a challenge for jobseekers, since they have to try to stand out from the crowd. It is a bit more difficult to get noticed using a fixed application form, but with our tips and tricks, you are already ahead of the rest!

  1. Be complete

In most forms the information about education and work experience is standardised. This enables the recruiter to find suitable candidates through different search functions. That's why it is very important that you fill out all fields if possible. If your education or industry sector is not listed, choose the best alternative. When you leave a field empty, some companies will put you lower on their ranking.

  1. Use relevant keywords

Some recruiters search for keywords in the free text fields in the application forms. Make sure that you include keywords that are relevant for the position in the free text field. By doing so, your application will surely appear on the result list when the recruiter is searching for certain important qualifications through the free text search.

  1. Be accurate

Many recruiters dislike the lack of accuracy when candidates fill out online application forms. Remember that the free text field in the online application form replaces the letter of application in the classical application. Don't forget the policy rules that apply for other applications. Do not make any spelling mistakes and use the upper and lower case.

  1. Focus on your strengths

The number of the characters in the free text field is often limited, so concentrate on your strengths and make it short. Someone who lists parts of his CV, will waste precious possibilities to present his profile. Mention in the free text fields also why you would be the perfect candidate for the job, since this is what recruiters want to read. Don't use sentences like "If you are interested in my profile, then I am looking forward to hearing from you". Try to go more into detail and explain why they should be interested in your profile.

  1. Make sure the attached documents are in the right format

If you can upload a document, make sure you use the format they ask. When it is possible, use a PDF file, to make sure they will see the layout like you see it. Give your attachments a correct and meaningful name (for example CV and your name).

  1. Prepare your application offline

Some company sites have a session time out. In order to be able to fill out the application form quietly and correctly, you can prepare it offline and load it up later on, especially for the free text fields, this can be very useful.

  1. Use the help functionality

A lot of companies offer a Help functionality with frequently asked questions. By using this tool, you can make sure you give the right information the company is looking for.
